How to achieve your goals this year…

It’s the new year and you’re probably thinking about how this year can be the best yet, new year new me and all that. Well this year is going to be the best yet because this is the year you smash those goals you’ve been aiming for for forever and a day, whether it be loosing a few pounds or starting your own company. Here’s how to start…

Firstly, be realistic

Set attainable yet challenging goals, there is no point setting a goal that is unachievable. Make sure that what you set is physically attainable; else you’re setting yourself up for disappointment and a loss of confidence.

Break it down

Think up your ultimate goal, a specific and well-defined goal, and break it down into stages that you can achieve in bite-sized chunks. Think up an action plan and write it down. For example if your ultimate goal is to have 100,000 followers on social media by the end of the year, start by aiming for 10,000 by a particular date as a smaller goal, then another 10,000 after that so that your ultimate goal is split into manageable aims and achievements.

Set realistic dates to achieve each of your goals and stick to them, put it into your calendar, diary and phone to help keep track. Make sure your goal has a deadline; this also helps create a sense of urgency that may help speed things up.

If you have a setback, ask for feedback

Ask for advice from people you respect or have gone through a similar journey. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for feedback and/or criticism, even if it’s difficult to hear because it will help in the long run.

Motivate yourself

Watch videos of people that have achieved similar to what you want. Read books to inspire you. Watching how others have succeeded may give you a better idea of what’s ahead and tips for the journey. Always start by saying ‘I will’ rather than ‘I would like to’; the first is positive and adamant the second lacks passion. Believe in yourself.

Tell people about it to make it real, write it down so you don’t forget and do whatever it takes to reach it. And don’t worry if you have a knock back, a lot of success stories do, just make sure you get back on the saddle straight away and learn from it.

Don’t forget goals must be SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound). Make it happen and smash it. You got this.
