How to renew/replace your passport

Passports typically last 10 years, always check before you travel when the expiry is because you’ll need to know in advance when it’s time to renew. People loose stuff, it happens, if you need to replace your passport, keep reading.

Before you start…

  • It can take approx. 6 weeks to receive a brand new passport if it’s the first time you’re applying for one, otherwise it’ll take around 3 weeks if you’re replacing or renewing
  • It’s more expensive to do via the Post Office than online
  • Prices range from £49 – 95 depending on the age of the passport owner and the method of paying (i.e. paper application form or online). For an adult to renew their passport online it costs £75.50
  • Urgent passports cost more
  • A standard passport is 34 pages, or if you travel often a ‘jumbo’ passport is available at 50 pages
  • You must be at least 16 years old to apply for an adult passport
  • If you need to change any details on your passport, i.e. you get married and need to change your surname… you must go through the same procedure as renewing your passport and pay
  • If your passport is lost, stolen or damaged you’ll need to replace it rather than renew it

Points to note:

  • Typically countries won’t allow you in with less than 6 months on your passport, so check and make sure you renew it before it gets too close to the cut off. It’s worth checking your flight terms in advance to check when their required amount is.
  • If the UK does leave the EU (Brexit) in March 2019, you’ll need to have 6 months on your passport when you travel within the EU, and your passport must be less than 10 years old.
